I See the World Through Photography: Interview With Marta Syrko
Marta Syrko is one of our notable Focused Collection contributors. Her portfolio has an artistic touch and absolutely masters the play with lighting. In Marta’s words, lighting truly is everything. Today she shares with us a little bit about her work, her practice and tips that might help you out as you’re working on your portfolio.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your professional career.
I’ve always been passionate about photography. This is not just my career, it’s my style of life. I see the world through photography. I understood that quite early and started working as a professional photographer at the age of 16. I divide my time between commercial photography (fashion, portrait) and fine art projects which I create for myself.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography for me is a way to express how I perceive the world.
What would you say distinguishes your personal style of photography?
Although I haven’t been working for a long time as a photographer, my style has changed and evolved and I believe it is still developing. What distinguishes my style at the moment is the way I see light and colour.
As your focus is on portrait photography, what are some things you’re trying to achieve with your portfolio?
For me, portrait photography is not limited to just the face. I create a story which describes the person’s character, their profession, feelings. That’s what I need to make series of photos to fully create their portrait.
What camera do you mostly shoot with? How important is gear for stock photographers?
I shoot with Canon 5d mark 4. It is necessary to create a high quality picture, but it’s not the main thing.
How do you take passion for photography and turn it into a full time job that’s rewarding?
I create photographs in my own style, people see them and they want to be part of them, so I’m lucky I get to do what I like.
How do you get inspired? What are some of the things you do to get inspired to shoot?
I find inspiration in different kinds of art – architecture, conceptual and traditional art. I can get inspired by what I see just by walking through the streets.
What are you looking for in a great picture?
The key element in a great picture is light.
What do you think distinguishes the Focused Collection from other similar platforms?
The Focused Collection has a special way of seeing photography.
Do you have a favorite image in your portfolio? If so, what’s the story behind it?
I like this because that model was afraid of water and it was hard for her to do it, it was like a psychological test for her.
Could you share a little bit about your fine art projects? Can we expect to see more of this genre in your portfolio?
I love all my art shoots. I mean I love to do them and people always want to take a part in this, and my friends help me too. And yes, there will be more and more fine art shootings.
Your #1 tip or words of wisdom?
